In this sector, the river Enns is still a small, alpine river with fast currents and at medium water levels it is rated as white-water class 1. At low water-levels you have to pay attention to rocks and wooden piles in the course of the river. At higher water levels you have to give way to branches and trees hanging in the river.

On the left bank of the river Enns, directly after the island behind the swimming lake in Aich (kayak school – rental) or after the distinctive wooden bridge in Aich.

Etappen

Directly after the access in Schladming, you start the tour in a sportive way. You should paddle in the middle of the stream from the beginning on to get away from the wooden piles of the sand island. After that you encounter attractive eddies, which you can pass quite easily. Depending on the water level, you should pay heed to rocks in the bottom water in this river stretch and on the left side branches could be hanging in the river. It is best to pass the first bridge on the right side of the pier and after 100 m a small, but beautiful standing wave will make every paddler’s heart beat faster. It is best to pass the wave on the left side, because on the right side rocks might be looming at low water levels. Directly after this wave, a big eddy awaits you on the left side. From now on the tour continues calmly and evenly, but you should stay attentive and look out for rocks and branches. Here, you encounter beautiful, natural and in the course of renaturation artificially created eddies. You should concentrate and plan your approach to them, because otherwise you might have unwanted and ungentle encounters with wooden piles. Now you reach the first concrete bridge after the access in Schladming. Caution: The bridge is slightly blocked by rocks. Directly afterwards it becomes more gentle again and you have many eddies on both river banks. At the wooden bridge in Lehen, you can either pass the bridge pier on the right or on the left side. After having passed these obstacles, you go on alongside the golf course to the next bridge in Oberhaus. From now on concentration and alertness are called for again. Now keep to the right, because already 50 m after the bridge a small rapid with two waves awaits you, which you should best master in its centre. You can also pass it on the left side – it is possible, but way less fun. Directly afterwards, one of two islands awaits you. Both islands are perfect for a relaxing break. CAUTION: In front of the second island, the river Enns splits into two arm, but the left course of the river is blocked by a fallen tree. Therefore you should absolutely stay on the right side.

After the two islands, the two arms of the river merge again. Now it is imperative that you focus again, because otherwise it might happen that you get pushed against the right bank and thus get keeled over. On the left bank, there is a big eddy. Immediately after this section, you can paddle on comfortably and with a lot of enjoyment, even though you should avoid some wooden piles, which might stick out of the water, depending on the water level. Then you reach a small pedestrian bridge in Haus, which you should pass on the left side and shortly afterwards you reach the concrete bridge in Weißenbach. Approximately 100 m in front of the bridge, beautiful eddies invite you to land. The small standing wave underneath the bridge is best to be mastered on the left side. Now it goes on quite leisurely until Höhenfeld. In this section, the Enns becomes a bit more narrow and you encounter a few beautiful waves, which make the ride more exciting. After the bridge in Höhenfeld you stay in the middle of the Enns, because there is a pile of driftwood, which you should definitely avoid and not get to near to it. After this obstacle, you’ve almost reached Aich. As soon as you can see houses, you should concentrate harder again, because shortly before you reach the exit, wooden piles are sticking out of the water again. At normal water levels there is enough space, but at low water levels this sections is quite narrow and you should paddle with attentiveness.
